CHAPTER TWENTY THREE
Drake slowed.
They had reached the end of the long underground passage. It broadened ahead, becoming a wide chamber with a low ceiling. The lighting in the area was dim.
“Is that a—” Alicia began.
“Yeah,” Kinimaka answered. “There’s an old tube train ahead. Shit. The tracks must start right there.”
“I really hope it doesn’t work,” Drake said.
Dahl moved faster. “Why else would they come here?”
Sensing this strategic and brilliant end to the kidnappers’ plan, the team came together. As they approached the point where the tunnel widened, Drake saw movement ahead. The tube train was two carriages long. Near the front, he saw eight mercenaries carrying rifles and dressed similarly, a man and a woman wearing casual clothes with flak jackets strapped over their chests, and one more man—the guy he’d thought might be in charge. Beside him stood President Coburn, both hands tied behind his back.
“Best chance yet,” Drake said. “Make it count.”
They raced for the rear of the train. A shout went up ahead. All eight mercenaries spun and fired. Drake dived to the left, narrowly avoiding falling into the train-track pit. Kinimaka did fall in and let out a large bellow.
Dahl tapped the Yorkshireman’s ankles. “Behind you.”
Drake rolled out and fired back. His bullets strafed the walls, forcing their eight attackers to take cover behind the front of the train. The President was dragged inside by the unknown woman and man.
The tall leader stared back at him. “Matt Drake,” he said and spat. “You will soon find the death that you deserve.”
Drake answered with a bullet. The leader twisted away, jumping aboard the train. His lackeys popped up once more, aiming in Drake’s direction. Bullets shattered the rear panel of the train, taking apart windows and metal, and bouncing off the iron wheels in a noisy hail of ricochets.
“Bet you wish you’d kept that grenade now,” Alicia whispered to Dahl.
“I’m not sure even I could have found a pin to stick in it that fast.”
“Really? But you could have used your—”
“We have to keep this cautious,” Hayden interrupted. “Remember, any crossfire hits the President and we’ve lost.”
Drake sighted under the train but couldn’t see far enough to the front.
When Molokai leaned out to take a shot, a bullet whizzed past his head. “Stalemate. We’re going nowhere.”
“I’ll forgive you for saying that,” Dahl said. “Since you don’t know me that well.”
Within seconds he was climbing up the back window of the train, using its frame and some of the ragged edges to boost himself up. When he’d gained the roof, Dahl crouched low and looked down.
“Gun.”
Drake handed him the most accurate weapon they had, with extra bullets. Dahl fell onto his stomach and crawled forward.
Molokai raised an eyebrow. “I’m guessing he does that a lot?”
“Yeah, he’s nothing if he isn’t a mad bastard,” Drake replied.
They waited. Alicia half-climbed the back of the train to check his progress. Before he was halfway along they felt a shudder pass through the train.
“No,” Hayden said. “Oh shit, it’s about to—”
Drake held her back.
